"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." Galatians 6:9
It's Wednesday night, December 6th, in Beaumont, Texas where the temperature is uncharacteristically low. It's 41° and drizzling, and the members here at Westgate Church of Christ are talking about how cold it is. Twenty of us are here helping rebuild homes that were devastated by Hurricane Harvey.
One of the elders at Westgate said they had a flood here in the 90's and someone marked the flood line on the building where he works. People living above that didn't purchase flood insurance, so when the waters from Hurricane Harvey rose 9'3" above that line, thousands lost all or most of everything they owned.
What do I see after three days of cutting and hanging sheet rock for people we've never met, who are not very much like us? Hope and gratitude.
Most of these people have been out of their homes for over three months wondering how in the world they'll ever rebuild. Now they have hope. And they can't stop saying thank you and blessing us. They have tears in their eyes and they run out of words. Yet in some way we feel more blessed than them - warm on a cold day.
Lord, help us be a blessing to those around us.
